I'm pretty sure that it just comes from the scientific name for the Great Awk "Pinguinus Impennis" because explorers from the north found penguins and went hey that kind of looks like the bird that we have up north.
That being said that might be the origin for the scientific name for the Great Awk. So really Im just pulling straws.
