I used to work in skydiving. When someone does this it is in fact doused in an accelerant and the use a tertiary parachute system. Standard rig has main and reserve parachute, tertiary means a 3rd canopy connected to the harness ring with a rigged up cutaway system. We used tertiary rigs for intentional cut aways. You have to have a cut away for a tandem rating so if you haven't had one organically they send you up with a tertiary rig.
