Why is my tongue swollen and sore on either side? I'm Dr. Manan Shah, I'm an ENT and allergist at Wyndly Health. When your tongue is swollen on either side, it's really frustrating and it can be due to a number of different issues.

One of the most common causes is a vitamin deficiency. You can be missing B12 or folic acid and this can cause something called glossitis and that's when you get a sore, smooth, or irritated cracked tongue.

It could also be due to aphthous ulcers. These are little white sort of circular ulcers that almost look like the skin has been eaten into in the tissue. And that can be due to stress or also due to poor nutrition.

And lastly, it might be that you are being exposed to something you're allergic to, and this is causing an oral allergy syndrome that can lead to swelling, itching, and even pain and irritation. In that case, it's probably worth talking to an allergist or trying to figure out what you might be allergic to. In either case, if you keep having a sore or swollen tongue, at some point it's worth making sure you see a dentist or a doctor to make sure there's not a lesion or something scary or bad on it. It's pretty unlikely, but it's possible, so it's worth getting checked out. Thanks.
