I am 1700, I use this as my main against the fried liver. Most people never play d6, but even if they don't, you still get a good position. If you were wondering, I have seen d6 in only 25% percent of the games in that position (7 games out of 28), but it is a guaranteed win if so. tl;dr it's worth trying.

In nearly 50 years of playing this from both sides of the board, I have never once seen anyone play d6 as white. Instead, 6. c3 kicks the knight

Isn't the signature move in the fried liver Nxd5? It wasn't played so is this really the fried liver? Edit: It is effectively the Fried liver attack after 6.Nxf7. So the Fried Liver Attack is a full Knight sacrifice of f7 after black plays 5...Nxd5

Nice mate, but unfortunately, they could just move the queen in front and your knight wouldn't mate the king because of the open square.

What if instead of capturing f7 with knight they capture with bishop and check. Well then you're little plan as black goes right out the window doesn't it.

This is called the Knight Attack not the Fried Liver ( the knight attack is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5) and the fried liver is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7 but i believe d4 is stronger than Nxf7
