As the balls are spherical there’s nothing for the rotating jaws to snag on or get a grip,if one part of the ball was bevelled off it would snag it and crush it

Definitely not steel balls. Those wouldn't bounce like it. Also, of course the shredder cannot shred them, simply because it cannot "catch" them. No edge, no corner for shredder to snag, balls would simply keep rolling.
