Theyā€™re called fukigaeshi, sometimes translated as ā€œblowback.ā€ Thereā€™s a great variance in them over time, as well as between practical and ceremonial armor. The usual explanations are that they protect the head and face from a sideswipe and prevent the chin strap from being severed, and/or some sources say they were for protection from arrows or fragments of shattered arrows to the side of the face, especially the eyes. In later times as their practical purpose diminished they were shrunk to little tabs, though on ceremonial armor they could be very prominent and stylized.

Thatā€™s cool that he spoke traditional Mexican at the end like they would back in those times

Wouldnā€™t a strike there create more torque, therefore increasing the chances of snapping your neck? Honestly asking here, not taking shots

But why do other cultures' helmet designs not have them? Wouldn't fighters in other parts of the world also find them useful?

Looks like it would just catch the blade and channel it right into your ear lol

We have a samurai armor in our small regional museum from when the Chinese came across durong the Gold Rush. No idea how they got their hands on it. But its my favorite object in our collection - and I always get questions about those things on the side of the helmet, which I had no idea until now. Thank you so much for this content

I love your wording. "Might be unpleasant." I'm pretty sure if a blade hit me in the head, it definitely would be unplesant. Thank you for imparting knowledge.

Might save your arm if the blade gets jammed in the groove too. Your neck would hurt for sure but you would keep your arm which is nice

How do you know thatā€™s how it works?

Metatron: (standing in front of an incoming sword) Donā€™t worry about it.

Do you have Oda Nobunaga armor in your collection?

Doesn't it then serve as a lever, increasing the strain on your neck at the moment it gets hit?
