We have a samurai armor in our small regional museum from when the Chinese came across durong the Gold Rush. No idea how they got their hands on it. But its my favorite object in our collection - and I always get questions about those things on the side of the helmet, which I had no idea until now. Thank you so much for this content

Theyāre called fukigaeshi, sometimes translated as āblowback.ā Thereās a great variance in them over time, as well as between practical and ceremonial armor. The usual explanations are that they protect the head and face from a sideswipe and prevent the chin strap from being severed, and/or some sources say they were for protection from arrows or fragments of shattered arrows to the side of the face, especially the eyes. In later times as their practical purpose diminished they were shrunk to little tabs, though on ceremonial armor they could be very prominent and stylized.
