Shakespeare was onto something when he said "all the world's a stage" in more than one way apparently

Also obscene comes from the Greek ob - scena for offstage, as they wouldn't show violence or death on stage, but they would happen offstage and be described by the chorus or a messenger

Edit: this is probably a myth, there are more likely etymological ancestries, I've found some that trace it to ob-caenum (from filth) in Latin, and possibly a link to augry.

My favourite is "breaking the 4th wall" which is referring to the metaphorical "wall" on the stage between the performers and the audience, as opposed to the other three physical walls of the stage.

people don't realise how theatre kids are slowly forming an alliance to gain the power of the whole world with musicals

Limelight specifically comes from literal limestone that would be heated by hydrogen and oxygen flames in lamps, which produced incredibly bright white light

I find it so interesting hiw words can completly change their meaning overtime. Especially in this modern day and age, there are constantly new words being invented and changing their meaning through the internet and memes.

I never realized this about "exit", but now I understand why "exeunt" means that everybody leaves: because "t" is the ending of present-tense third-person singular verbs and "nt" is the ending of present-tense third-person plural verbs.

Also, going upstage draws attention for an additional reason: Because this term comes from a time in which stages were raked, the upstage is literally higher than downstage, and I can tell you from experience that the higher you are on a raked stage, the easier it is to call the audience's attention to yourself. It's so powerful.

It's also amazing how much these terms have stuck around in theater contexts. Like reading Shakespeare, the stage direction is basically the same as you'd get in a modern script.

Even the word "person" comes from a Latin word meaning ā€œmask used by actor; role, part, characterā€

The diagram reminds me of the term ā€œtake center stageā€ which is more obviously a theatre term but itā€™s yet another example of what heā€™s talking about

I think this is because theater is a lot older than people think so these words are older than most ā€œslangā€. To the point that many wouldnā€™t think of it as slang anymore.
