Another major defeat of the colonisers by an African army was by the Zulus at the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879, during the reign of King Cetshwayo. The Battle of Adwa followed soon thereafter under the command of Menelik and his masterful Generals. As you mention, this challenged the racist narrative upon which the 'colonial project' was premised, causing incredible embarrassment to the British and Italians.
