The CAGED system is all based on the MINOR PENTATONIC SCALE (1-b3-4-5-b7). I remove the 4 and instead put in a 3, and only go UP from b3/3.
Now it’s 1-b3/3-5-b7 which is essentially a Dominant 7th chord arpeggio. All on DGBE: for E7, 2130; D7, 2434; C7, 6757; A7, 9797; G7, 999-10; and finally play E7 again, 14-13-15-12.
These EDCAG-7 forms are a way to find the most “inside” notes of the 5-Dominant 7 chord forms. Next, start adding notes: 1-b3/3-5-b7, then add 4, b5, 6, 2. Now you have Mixolydian and the Blues scale (1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7) added on top of Dom.7 arpeggios.
Even b2/b6/7 can be added as part of chromatic lines. All 12 notes can be added to those 5 EDCAG-7 forms.
- Play along to a 3-Dom.7 chord Blues.
Start with the arpeggios and begin adding in all the other notes.

the 3rd position of major is the same as minor with the root note on the low E string? REVELATIONS!! so cool, thanks for this! hope you have similar to minor scale too, gotta check out! so easy to learn over the pentatonic boxes, i knew it was beneficial to learn them by heart first! so cool to notice down the road that you've made right decisions in the beginning :)

How are the numbers assigned to these patterns?
Cause I learned what you’re calling 4&5, as patterns 1&2.
Which seemed logical, since the first note in the this pattern, is the Root note on the 6th string.

Is this just for c major, so if I wanted to play a major would I just have to switch the root notes
