I am a pilot. In 2000 in Honolulu, we decided to take a scenic helicopter ride. The pilot put the women up front and four big guys in the back. I weighed about 250 at the time. I told the pilot that the helicopter was out of weight balance and he told me to shut up or get off. We chose to get off. Another couple got onboard. The front desk also refused to refund our tickets. Later that night we saw the news report about a fatal helicopter crash that killed everyone. That was our flight. I never again rushed the preflight preparation including weight and balance.
Update 5/30/2024 after hundreds of comments. We moved to Honolulu in 1999. The event occurred in the summer of 2000. I posted 24 years later. I made the mistake of saying Honolulu instead of Hawaii or more specifically Maui. No, my tickets were not refunded. I did not attempt to collect anything as I assumed the company would be in financial trouble. It is also possible that a different flight crashed on the same day. It is nearly impossible to know even then because of the ensuing news chaos. We were so busy furnishing our home, traveling the islands, learning how to live in Hawaii that we did not want to be constantly reminded of a near fatal event in life.

Thereâs a spray bar on this plane which is what should have been used. Instead the drop gate is opened and these planes generally carry about 400-450 gallons of liquid. I mix chemical and load a spray plane as part of the million things I do at work all day and I can tell you that I have never in the almost decade Iâve been in agriculture and on the flight line specifically, ever met one spray pilot who would drop that gate in flight to âshow offâ or for any reason whatsoever on purpose. It is incredibly dangerous because you have up to 500 gallons of liquid that can weight anywhere from 4,117 pounds if itâs just fresh water with nothing else in it then you go adding chemical and that wheat can increase significantly, for instance Echo a very commonly used fungicide weighs 6.0 lbs /gal. You are adding anywhere from 10-25 sometimes 30 gallons of echo to a load depending on what other chemicals are in that load, how much your total load is in gallons so you could have a 450 gal total load and need 15 gallons of just echo in that load (then you might add other chemicals like your pesticide/insecticide/herbicide whatever the case might be or even an oil called aphoil which is used on potatoes rather than using the usual insecticides/pesticides) thatâs another 90lbd just in that one chemical! So so thatâs all you used and you now have a total weight (just in chemical/water mixture in that tank) of 4,207 (give or take but effectively that should be the total if you measured and loaded correctly) you open that drop gate instead of using the spray gear which brings that weight and pressure down from the max to empty at a specified flow rate thatâs not abrupt and going to knock you backwards and Ko your hind end. You canât just open that gate, go from an extra 4 THOUSAND pounds plus of liquid to normal pilot: plane weight instantly and stay in the air! I donât know ANY spray pilot that would do this on purpose, much less âshowing offâ ?! Show off what?! The fastest way to wreck your plane and look like an incompetent fool?! I highly doubt this was on purpose but if it was dude should have Never been in that plane to begin with.

Actually, he did 4 stupid things: you should never perform any acrobatic maneuvers directly above people, or with your momentum going in the direction of people. He was coming straight at them, and passed directly overhead. Also, unless taking off or landing, you must remain at least 500 feet from any person, vessel, vehicle or structure. He clearly did not. Too bad that he died, but at least he didn't kill a bunch of other people as well.

Why does maneuvering speed decreases as your weight decreases???
Aircraft weight affects your AOA required to maintain level flight. Let's say that at a lower weight you only require 2 degrees AOA to stay level but near your max gross weight you need 4 degrees AOA to stay level.
Let's also assume that your aircraft critical angle of attack is 16 degrees. This is the angle the aircraft will stall.
If you are heavy, it's not possible to pull more than 4 G's in this example at a given speed because that's 4 times your AOA and you will stall at 16 degrees AOA. (This assumes 4G's is within the limits of your airframe)
If you are lightweight, at the same speed, you could pull up to 8 G's before you hit the critical AOA and stalled, and this is beyond the structural limit for most planes. Thus, as your weight decreases, you need to slow down (or just fly smooth with slow control inputs to avoid over-stressing the airframe).
