Here's a demo of using a pair of Motorola XPR 6550s to send text-based messages over radio using DMR. Your AnyTone can't do this! More on how this is done later.

In a Red Dawn event I'd like to have encryption capabilities in my back pocket.

It bugs me that almost every government agency now uses encrypted communications, including municipal garbage collectors, but it's illegal for me as an amateur radio operator to encrypt a private message. Who is working for whom? This is a bit like a company giving mil-spec spread spectrum encrypted radios to the employees in the warehouse but the company's owners and upper management are required to post videos of all board meetings and strategic planning meetings on YouTube. We the People elect and hire government employees, so why do the employees get encryption and the employers are not allowed to have private communications? Similar to gun control laws, only the law abiding are impacted by these laws. The criminals simply ignore these laws. The laws provide no additional safety for the law abiding, while depriving us of our privacy and security.

Interesting! Can't wait to see what you do with this! I had a 6550. Now I wish I still did.

Motorola Digital DTR radios have built-in text messaging to named users or whole groups using the digital spread spectrum frequency hopping 900 mhz ISM band.
No license required.
Privacy Groups use encryption!
Voice or Data available in a $100 used radio. Easily programed in CPS on a laptop.

Well you stirred up a shitstorm with the E word. I'm really interested in seeing your results when you test on commercial band.

Nice! While ham radio has value, we always need to have an eye on those “next level” needs! Thanks to all the advice here, I’m gearing up!

We did this via encrypted satellites in the mid-90s with a similar device connected to our laptops in Bosnia.

Your first "encryption" would be ROT-X (in ROT-13 A becomes N ... etc).

Keep in mind that's like using street slang to fool the cops.

So at minimum I would suggest you share a secret codeword before SHTF and then at use that codeword for Skip32 (aka SkipJack) encryption.

That said - Skip32 was declassified decades ago and people that really want/know/etc can crack it with enough sample messages.

You don’t need the tough book to send text. The 6550 already does that on its own. Have a few of them for EMCOMM for the family. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Stay Prepped people!

For digital voice communications with my local buddies, I deliberately chose Yaesu System Fusion as the least popular (sorry Yaesu!) to lower the odds of interception. It's far from encryption, but much less likely to be heard by the Baofeng army. :-)

Pro Tip - Communicating less will greatly reduce the odds of interception. Do you really need long emotional support conversations when the SHTF?

When you start looking into encryption consider using an asymmetric 2-key encryption protocol such as pgp, gpg, or some other open source protocols offer extremely robust security (> 2024 bit keys 🔑) plus authentication using digital signatures. I concurr that when SHTF the FCC regulations will go right in the dumpster. If one wated to "practice" using encryption one could do so legally outside the Ham bands using something like Meshtastic that's not covered by the same Part 97 regulations as the Amateur bands. I like Meshtastic in concept because I heard a gov't official talking about it and they sounded very worried and the hardware is inexpensive & open source

Now let’s do it with MotoTRBO mobile unit so we’ve got 50-100 watts RF for longer distances.

So the pc can see the radio as a network card? That simple ? Can you use it as a wireless link onto the network and access a nas for example? What kind of range do they have ? This is an awesome tool for a local group
