"Dearly Beloved" from the Kingdom Hearts series always gives me crazy nostalgia for a simpler time in my life.

Some also swear by the assault rifle - rather easy to make, with good range, good accuracy and rate of fire. A good "workhorse" type of weapon but suffers against armoured opponents.
Heavy SMG is very good mid-game weapon that is easy to overlook and is perhaps your best choice for low-skill pawns.
As for eng-game options. Minigun is a bit too heavy to carry around outside emergencies, to be honest. Sniper rifle is also worth a mention - it requires a good quality and good skill, BUT it is a very good for taking out mortar crews or initiating fights when you are raiding.

still a big fan of the assault rifle for its very high accuracy at long ranges

I tend to just use a mixture of charge rifles and charge lances depending on colonist levels and traits like careful shooter or trigger happy

Nothing is “useless” against more armoured opponents in vanilla combat because the vanilla armour calculation doesn’t allow enough mitigation of damage even for really good armour against low AP weapons. Anything short of legendary cataphract armour is still gonna have the pawn taking a not insignificant amount of damage from each volley of even a normal quality minigun.

Don't ignore the humble Heavy SMG. While it is shorter range, it does solid work in every situation, and is also good for pawns who are meh shooters thanks to its high rate of bullet spam.

Chain shotgun on a movement-maxed pawn with double outer blades. Can (and has) single-handedly shredded through entire raids on its own.
