Someone bought and played Chrono Trigger in 1995, then saw DBZ on Cartoon Network many years later and thought "Hey, that DBZ show looks like Chrono Trigger".
EDIT: For me, personally, it was "that chrono trigger game looks like DBZ".
So I was born 1991. I was obviously unaware of "chrono trigger" as a little kid. Became more glued to DBZ during the Buu saga (age 11) on cartoon network. Learned about "chrono trigger" years later, and thought "hey, that Chrono Trigger game looks like DBZ" (as it probably should be lol).

Whoa... To be honest, I always thought it was kind of random that Toriyama drew the concept art for Chrono. Masato Kato makes more sense.

Not gonna lie, Kato's version of Ayla looked kinda cute, as did their Lucca, heck even Marle. Dang. Not to knock a legend's work, but I find it interesting. Marle actually looks like something you'd see in Ranma 1/2 lol. Heck, she almost looks straight up like Girl!Ranma.

Masato Kato was the story editor of Chrono Trigger and a big part of what made the story so great. He was also the one who came up with the Kingdom of Zeal btw.
He was also the story editor in Final Fantasy VII. Which explains a lot.
