While it's impossible to determine gods and rituals of ancient pile-dwellers, old idols and artifacts let us get a glimpse their worship and its connection to the stars.
Already in the Neolithic, many artistic expressions of the pile-dwellers emerge. (In the 5th millennium BC) female idols, probably representing ancestors, mythical earth mothers or deities, were a common find across Europe. Later, a ritual house (in Ludwigshafen on Lake Constance) would be decorated with clay relief and white paint. As astral symbols, the numerous crescent-shaped andirons found in Bronze Age villages dating from around 1100â800 BC, probably also had a religious function. Ceremonial sites with stone menhirs and stelae were combined into a large complex outside the lakeside settlements. (Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel).
While rare, figural depiction was also present through 3 millennium BC. These range from female shape, to a masked, beaked humanoid that could represent a sky deity and was used in a religious ritual. Rattles and other figurines also depicted animal forms. The patterned pottery and idols could also present celestial bodies and constellations, like Orion, Cassiopeia and Northern Cross.
