I also check the bark shavings. Check the inside of the bark on the ground and if the color is roughly the same as the edges of what bark is still attached to the tree then I take that as a good indicator of a fresh rub. If the interior portion of the bark on the ground has turned gray, I generally consider that rub at least a year old. I may be wrong but I assess it that way.
