Why Jey and Jimmy Uso stopped wearing facepaint? The Usos originally began painting their faces for dark matches using a sharpie, an idea that caught WWE's attention and approval. Apparently it was also a way to homage their late uncle Umaga, who trained them to the art of pro wrestling.

When The Usos turned heel in 2016, they decided to revamp their look by ditching the colorful facepaint and donning all black attire. WWE officials, however, complained that their new look made them resemble their cousin Roman Reigns too closely. Jey Uso explained in an interview that Vince McMahon wanted them to keep the facepaint, as according to him it also helped telling the twins apart.

After Jimmy and Jey fought back hard on that notion, the facepaint was ultimately discarded to fully embrace their heel turn and new identity, marking a significant shift in their wrestling careers.

Here's how Main Event Jey Uso recollected trying to get rid of the facepaint (from the New Day Podcast, transcription credits to wrestlinginc.com): "Yeah, uce [there was resistance to Usos giving up the face paint]. Obviously, for the heel change, we needed to change everything, but they were saying when they had first seen us working in all black, it was like, 'you guys look too much like Roman. Don't look like Roman.' 'Man, who the hell else are we supposed to look like? We're in the same gene pool, uce.' Like, we fought to get that [face paint] off. They wanted us to keep it, but in my mind it wasn't going to work." Jey continued, "there was no way we could get away from that. Like, we were colorful, but then we had to get completely away from that. 'They can't tell who y'all are without the face paint.' You know how that is."
