This has been the biggest lesson for me. In fact, your DEFAULT setting should be to not trade... until you find the right opportunity for your strategy.
A good tip for those who get the syndrome of "but then I didn't do anything..." Yes you did. You analyzed charts, price action, indicators (if you're using them), and dug through stock after stock from your scanners, maybe you drew structure lines, and you made a decision. No trade always beats a bad trade.
