Learn how to measure and evaluate your project's progress with Benjamin Dean. From project milestones to qualitative metrics, this video will guide you on assessing your project's impact and success.

When you're writing a grant application, one of the most crucial aspects that funders want to see is how you'll measure and evaluate the progress of your project. They aren't just interested in what you’ll do but how you’ll track it, assess your success, and make adjustments. In this video, I’m going to answer the key question, "How will you measure and evaluate the progress in ways that are relevant and meaningful to your project?" It’s essential to provide concrete methods for tracking progress and showing that you’re committed to delivering the outcomes you promised.

Grant funders want to ensure that their investments will create a measurable impact. This is why developing an effective evaluation plan is critical, and it's something that can set your proposal apart from others. In this video, I’ll walk you through three effective strategies to answer this question, using my 10+ years of experience in grant writing, grant giving, and nonprofit management.

First, I’ll talk about defining clear and measurable goals. It’s not enough to have broad or vague objectives; you need specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. These goals provide a foundation for the entire project’s progress. I’ll give you examples of how to frame your project goals to meet these standards and make them attractive to funders.

Second, I’ll explain how to select the right metrics for your evaluation. Not all metrics are created equal. The metrics you choose should directly tie into your project’s mission and its intended outcomes. Funders want to know exactly how you’ll quantify success and how you will track whether or not your project is on the right path. I’ll go over examples of both quantitative and qualitative metrics that can work well for different types of projects.

Finally, I’ll cover how to create a robust evaluation timeline. An evaluation plan isn't just about collecting data at the end of your project. Funders want to see that you’ll track progress throughout the project lifecycle, so you can make adjustments as needed. I’ll share how to break down your project timeline into milestones that allow for continuous assessment and improvement.

By the end of this video, you’ll be ready to create an evaluation plan that resonates with funders and shows that you’re serious about making an impact. Plus, I’ve included a link to a free download in the description that provides seven additional strategies to measure and evaluate progress—don’t miss it!
