To put that number into perspective, over 1.5 million Russians, mostly civilians died in the 29 month seige of Leningrad. A similar amount died in the battle of Stalingrad which lasted onlt about half a year.
During the opening phases of WW1 there were hundreds of thousands of casualties. During the Crimean war of 1853 nearly half a million soldiers died in the grueling seige.
In the late 20th century millions of people have died due to famines, wars and ethnic cleansing efforts, 50 million Chinese during Mao's rule, 3 million Bengolis during the 1971 war of Bengali independence, millions of Indians during the partition and many more in Cold war conflits.
The situation today is vastly better than just a few decades ago, we shouldn't despair but rather be optimistic that the deaths are going down.
The world population has expanded rapidly and yet through medical innovations even the most bitter conflicts in the poorest of regions aren't nearly as bloody as the great wars of the past were. This is a Good trend, wars are hard to end but with humanitarian efforts and strict enforcement of international law we can bring down the casualties of these conflicts.
