Trails are not allowed to evolve, you were right on that. It is because if every person start to make their own shortcuts, you start to create a big impact in the mountain vegetation. It could look ridiculous in this situation, but they are allways looking to minimize the human impact on nature.

I do see an erosion reason. Water is going to flow on the top section of trail, flow down the shortcut cause rosion on it and the trail below on it that you're filming from.
