This has caused me so much pain in the past. I've always tried my utmost to learn everything right when it's presented and it always felt so bad when I couldn't

This is true, one of the differences of undergraduate and graduate school too. I liked graduate school more, because we were actually pursuing the rigorous math, to the point I wish that was the format of every class, but that's probably just me thinking about sunk costs. I'll see what happens as I teach and find out what's better.

Yeah , because there is some things while in lecture doesn't make sense ( doesn't fit properly) FOR THE TIME BEING, but then after that you learn about it after you primed yourself to it , then learn it in lecture ( all of this just to not let our cognitive load be relatively high for no reason ) , you Will eventually know how it is relevant and how it does fit in the big picture.
And for anyone wondering what would happen if you engage in it , you'll just be overwhelmed and you might even feel like you aren't that good in the subject.
