Then a little kid comes up. They're dressed like the character, obviously excited to meet the actor. They can barely see over the table before sliding a poster of the character onto the table for the actor to sign.
"You're my favorite!"
Tears, a signing, and a photo later, the actor has a bit of hope.

"There is no point.." As I was about to walk away without any hope left, I seen someone, they were running towards... Me? "Hey, are you lost?" I asked with a forced smile.
"What are you talking about, I'm here for you! You were basically amazing, I especially loved the part where..."
I couldn't recall the last bits but I could feel my tensed body loosening, my smile turning geniune. "What a great feeling" I thought.

I waited hour after hour, until the lights dimmed and the hall was nearly empty.
Not that it hadn’t felt empty already, but now it actually was empty. Earlier, there had been hundreds of faces swimming through the crowd, eager to meet their favorite actor or actress from the show they loved most.
I had expected maybe a few—a small handful would have made my day. I had said to my colleagues, “I’ll expect the worst, you know, so I’m not disappointed!” I’d said it with a smile, still so sure that things would go alright, that it would be fun.
I hadn’t really expected the worst. No, not at all. I hadn’t expected no one to come. I had thought maybe my mother—who claimed she was my #1 fan—would at least make an appearance. She didn’t.
I opened my phone nearly a hundred times in that first hour alone, scrolling through our last messages. Her reply to me telling her I was nervous had simply been, “Okay.” What did that mean? Was she coming?
She never came. I stood like a shadow, waiting for something that would never come, wanting something that wasn’t meant to be mine. My gaze had lingered enviously on those with the lines stretching to the back of the hall.
Why couldn’t that be me?
Now, standing in the darkness, tears stung my eyes, salty and bitter, but they were necessary. My legs ached from standing, so I sat, pulling my knees to my chest and lowering my head.
What was the point, anyway? No one had come. I wouldn’t even have minded being someone’s second favorite. I just wanted… something, anything to tell me, “You did your best.”

I waited for my fans excitedly. Our movie was successful, and I was going to have my first ever meet and greet!
I waited for hours for everyone to come, so they could meet me. I waited.
And waited.
And waited.
But they didn’t come.
I watched as other actors and actresses posed and smiled for their fans, having large queues. But here I was, sitting and waiting.
Even when the venue was about to close. One of the security guards walked up to me. “Ms. Arin, we have to close now.” I smiled softly and shook my head “No… they’re probably late, right? Maybe we sent out the wrong date for the meet and greet…” I whispered, tears pricking at my eyes. I knew, deep down that nobody cared. They didn’t care about meeting me. The security guard shrugged “Suit yourself.” He walked away, leaving me to wait.
I felt tears streaming down my face, and I tried to wipe them away, but they kept coming. I couldn’t have anyone see me cry…
“Viola Arin?” A soft voice asked. I looked up at them, and I saw the face of a young man, maybe my age. I half-smiled and wiped my tears. “Oh, I apologize… is there something you need?” I asked softly, and he grinned. “I’m Jason Harris, I’m a big fan!” I blinked in surprise. A fan?
“Really? I… is this a joke?” I asked. He shook his head “No, your movie was great! You played Aster really well!” My smile widened “I… thank you.”
About an hour later, Jason and I were still talking, bonding. Even though only one person came, I was happy with the person that did.

I should have known this would happen. God, I should have just listened to my mom and been a doctor. Nobody cares about me. What am I doing?
I reach to pack up. I’m done. This is so stupid. I’m going home and am already planning out how to tell the director that I’m quitting.
“Oh thank God you’re still here!”
I look up to see the most beautiful woman I have ever seen racing towards me. She looks exhausted but relived, and there is a sparkle in her eye that shows how happy she is to see me. I haven’t seen that sparkle in years.
“Me?” I ask.
“Yes, you! I’ve been planning on coming for months and of course today is the one day my car breaks down.” Even her voice is beautiful, like a bird song that makes my heart race.
“Would you mind giving me an autograph?” She holds up a notebook and a bright pink pen.
“Yeah, yeah, of course.” I reach forward, still dazed.
“Gah, thank you! I was so scared I was too late to meet you. You play my ABSOLUTE favorite character.”
“Really?” I look up from the notebook. “I’m your favorite?”
“Well, duh!” She giggles. “I’ve wanted to meet you for like, forever!”
Something flips in my chest and I hand the notebook back to her. “What’s your name?”
“Jane. Jane Streb.”
“Well, Jane Streb, would you maybe like to go get a drink with me?”
Her mouth drops open, and her eyes widen in shock. For a heartbeat I’m so terrified that she’ll say no, but then she clutches her hand together and smiles the most beautiful smile in the history of the earth.
“I’d love to”

Happy ending:
Tears filled her eyes as she stared down. The blue, oddly, colored tiles reflecting off the bright yellow light above. The giant poster signs behind her filled with her doing the funniest poses ever. But even the things that made her laughing for weeks could barely help her stand up right. She leaned against the wall the small window above her letting the moon glistening onto her. She pulled at the characters necklaces it’s cold, imprinted, stone etching at her finger. She felt a tap on her shoulder, the one that seemed to brighten everything. “Bug?” He said his voice in that oddly satisfying emotionless tone. “You know your character is suppose to be depressed.” He paused, “I think I’d do a better job.” She smiled slightly as he leaned against the back wall, his elbows touching right up to her. “Well little bug, why don’t you go home?” Her jaw dropped but she caught it with her hand covering her mouth before she spoke. “It’s already done?” He burst out laughing breaking that blank face, “It ended an hour ago but I wanted to see how long you would last… but I was getting bored.” She giggled before staring back down. She had hoped maybe a little kid would giggle like that when they saw her but no one had. No one had even come over. Suddenly he was kneeling right at her black, steel boots. “Oh please little bug! I need an autograph so bad!” She chuckled, that glint in his eyes. It was always there when he was acting. She knelt down and kissed him on the lips before she could even realize what she had done. His eyes widened before that actor glint was thrown out the window. He now grabbed her hand and kissed it like she was a queen. “Let’s go home.” She went to walk forward before she stopped, “Don’t you live an hour away from me?” He smirked, “Who said I’m going to my house.”
