Having dedicated roles is actually a good thing in my opinion as it helps establish a core network of stationary/hilltop/whatever nodes that are more geared up to actually delivering messages over long distances. This also frees up the client nodes to be able to focus on message sending/delivery rather than relaying packets every few seconds (i.e, better battery life). Another benefit is less traffic saturation with wasted repeats and ultimately better reliability. That said, there's always the ad-hoc nature of client-to-client communication in the middle of nowhere, out of range of a repeater that is meshtastics only advantage here... but for most of us that are into the 'hobby', we already have a core infrastructure of nodes around us.
