Yeah! Lets make D&D less realistic! In real life getting the jump on your enemies means a profound advantage, but lets make it so if a group sneaks up and starts firing arrows into your back... that's just a minor inconvenience. NICE!

To be fair surprise always was done poorly or outright ignored at most tables I ever came across so simplifying the rule I'd say is a good thing
