My first ever Dog at 50 yrs old was a female Doberman Pincher that was gifted to me by my daughter. It's a challenge at times but i can say this... This dog would die for me. Just Knowing that? Builds a very strong bond. The constant attention the Doberman requires has been challenging.

I worked at a vets and they said that labs and goldens were often the worst trained because families would get them and expect them to be already trained and not realise thay are only good family dogs if you put in the effort. A family memeber of my partners have 2 labs and they are the worst trained things Ive ever seen

My parents who were first time dog owners got a Labrador cross golden retriever puppy for our family when we were young and he was the best dog that I have ever seen. Always kind and gentle with us children and other small animals. My mum made sure that he was well trained when young and it paid off for the many years of love he gave us.

My adopted Labrador is the most intense dog I have ever had. He is kind of high strung and demands constant attention.

I feel like "easy" dogs like goldies make first time owners complacent. I've seen so many badly behaved goldies, it's ridiculous. Never any bites but the incessant pawing and distractibility is insane at times.

Don't get me wrong they are great dogs but with (imo) terrible marketing.

No contest for me - the labrador retriever. I would never ever get a Golden - in the last five years, I have seen this breed go downhill when it comes to intelligence. Maybe Iā€™m just biased, but I have walked dogs for 10 years and in the last year, I had three Goldens in my pack and not one of them were smart - one would bark at men and little children, one just wanted to roll and wade in mud and water tomget covered and the third one thought it was great for you to just chase it - it had zero recall and only came back if you ignored it.

You only ask yourself this questions: Do you have the time and will to train your dog? Because goldens and labs are maybe the most chosen breeds because they are easy to train and kind. This breeds are social butterflies. The most golden and labs havenā€™t got any problem in the socialization with other dogs, animals and people. Thatā€™s what I think, the most importent in choosing this breed. All dogs need a job, or else, they find a job by themselves. So, even if goldens and labs are easy to train, you have to make time for that. My dog is a Dutch Partridge dog. Happy to work with you, social around other dogs and people, but a dog with a long period to become an adult, because of the character.

I donā€™t think Iā€™ll have anything but American Labradors they are high energy and kind of annoying but they are always excited to try something new and they have plenty of energy to run with an atv or swim for hours for a first time dog owner I would go with an English Labrador as they are easy to train even with several mistakes on your end and they are generally pretty lazy and happy to just exist

In my opinion, one of the easiest dogs is the saint Barnard. A friend of mine's mom has one, and from the start, she was such a laid-back loving dog. Not very well trained, as far as obedience goes, but since she's so mellow, it almost dont matter. I'm not saying don't train ur dogs, but after being around that dog, it made me consider them as an easy dog to have given you have the space and dont mind drool. If you want a smaller dog, I'd say get a beagle. They are used in labs due to them being so loving and forgiving, which is sad but useful as a first dog. Definitely want to make sure you have an escape proof yard, though, since they are hounds and hounds are roamers

I went for a miniature dachshund and I do not regret it. He has been quite easy to train, he is clever and responsive although he hasnā€™t yet learned how to ask for the loo.

Couldn't agree more my first dog was a Labrador best dog in the world now I have a German shepherd and she's the most down to earth dog

I want a golden so badly, but Iā€™m afraid of their hot spots/skin troubles. Iā€™ve only had Labradors so far, and have not had to deal with this yet.

I would have concerns about size and about their tendency to pick stuff up and swallow it. Easy to train for a professional and easy to train for someone who has never had a dog arenā€™t the same thing. Donā€™t get me wrong they are both great breeds.

I always had chocolate lab's which are supposed to be the more energetic..I had one from a hunting line and it showed. Very energetic but great family dog. My second was a English lab and she was a lot calmer. But didn't like people or dogs. My third one is a English one, she is almost 2 years. I would say a mix between my first 2. But also doesn't like people, loves dogs though which is challenging walking her since she is leash reactive. But we are getting there. Love lab's. Great dogs
