It could be to deter orcas from congregating in the area. Having orcas around is not good for baby humpbacks and it may even be worth attacking every orca nearby to make them leave.

Learn something every day even at 59yr old, I had no idea humpbacks did this.

It was documented by marine scientists a few years ago off the coast of Southern California that a humpbabk came to the rescue of a grey whale and her calf. The pair were ambushed by orcas as they were migrating north. The scientists wached the battle for hours until nighttime fell and so they never knew if they were ultimately successful in saving the calf. Orcas kill grey whale calves in significant numbers during their migration from Mexico to Alaska every year. It is very sad.

I just visited the Bay Area and saw Humpback whales on 3 separate occasions. They were magnificent! I knew they were big but really didn't know how big.
