Step into the world of Houska Castle, hidden in the thick forestry of Czechia. This castle stands on a cliff in Prague's countryside, isolated from all trade routes, with no source of water or fortification. It's shrouded in nightmarish myths and occultist legends.
According to folklore, Houska Castle was built to seal a crack in the limestone, a gateway to Hell, from which demonic beings emerged to feed on villagers. It's said that prisoners facing the gallows were offered full pardons if they agreed to be lowered into the hole and report what they saw. The first man to do so returned with white hair, driven insane by what he witnessed.
The castle's eerie history doesn't end there. During World War II, Nazi experiments took place within its walls, leading some to believe the Wehrmacht occupied the castle to investigate the gateway to Hell. To this day, Houska Castle remains one of the most haunted places on Earth.
The first known structure at the site was a wooden fort in the 9th century, and King Ottokar II of Bohemia had the Gothic structure built in the 13th century. Oddly, the original construction omitted stairs from the courtyard to the upper floors and most of the defenses faced inwards. The king sealed the gateway to Hell with stone plates and had a chapel built above it, dedicated to Archangel Michael.
