Was Ishmael a homosexual? We don't know. No one knows. It's possible, and it seems the authors of Genesis want the reader to think so. But this may be part of a larger trend in Genesis to describe Israel's neighbors origin stories with what would have been culturally negative elements. #shorts #bible #archaeology #biblicalarchaeology #genesis #hebrew

I wonder whether "mocking" was chosen in translation because it might reflect the fact that Hagar had passed her contemptuous attitude towards Sarah onto her son Ishmael who then also ended up having a foul attitude towards Sarah and now her boy Isaac.

Biblical Hebrew words often have many meanings and the context tells you which it means. In fact there are sometimes words that mean two directly opposite things and context is how you know which it means. This is also why Hebrew is so often spoken in idiomatic phrases

In the Jewish Study Bible it uses the word "playing" instead of "mocking," and it explains that "playing is another pun on Isaac's name (cf. 17.17; 18.12; 19.14; 26.8). Ishmael was 'Isaacing,' or 'taking Isaac's place.'" It seems that many interpretations, including yours, are rather speculative
