A common mistake when sheathing your katana is this… However, what you should do is this: Keep the Tsuka-gashira, the end of the handle, at the center of your body, This is because you can only draw toward the direction the Tsuka-gashira is facing. Some call Iai, the Budo of katana drawing, “the art of constant cautiousness.” The ultimate goal is not to give any chance to the opponent to attack. So if you move the Tsuka-gashira around very time you sheath, you can’t immediately draw again if necessary.
