i tried picking straight down when i started learning this but my teacher told me do angle the pick and pick more towards the bridge. that helps getting the thumb to access the string easier and more consistenly. (at least more than i did before) then i got it first try.

The way I learned to do this was just to try and make every note a pinched harmonic. It eventually becomes easy. If you’re new to this, the more you overdrive your amp the easier it will be.
