We still use a similer tactic in the ADF for bush patrols where the front man designated as a scout yell a warning and fire off a full mag, the squad will get cover and use suppressive fire while the LMG gets his gun up and than he will start suppression. after the LMG starts they will start "Aussie Pealing" and have the most forward man dash to the back, slowly retreating while the rest of the squad provides suppressive fire, and the grenadear will fire off his GL at the assumed positon of the enamy. once they are more than 100 meaters away they will pop smoke and switch to light fire of 1-4 round birsts. NOTE: this tactic is made for bushland and jungle ONLY and is better with a smaller group where the enamy outnumbers you. it is much more effective to use other tactics when you have superior numbers or are fighting in open fields.

We Kiwi's were also in Vietnam as well.
We did some CRAZY shit to our weapons we could take with us, from cut down surplus Bren Gun's into 'The Bitch' configurations, strapping flamethrower's to the sides of M1897 Trench Gun's, giving M2 / M3 Carbines 50 round magazines, but my absolute favourite?
Thompson's and Lanchester's being used like massive walking walls of gunfire in urban enviroments.

I'm half Vietnamese and studied the Vietnam War since I was a kid, which was about 50 years ago. The Aussie involvement is grossly under appreciated. There was usually no firebase support. Which means they were on their own when sweeping areas. No calling in artillery like the US counterparts.
Aussies perfected the sweep and forward tactic in turn gained respect with the nva and VC. In other words the Aussies were nothing short of badasses in Vietnam and respected by both sides.

My uncle was one of these very scouts! He was an ANZAC soldier from New Zealand. One of his experiences with an SLR was used in a book about British firearms as a real-world example of the SLRโs stopping power. He shot an enemy scout through the right shoulder and when he turned him over he could fit his fist inside the hole in his back

I remember a post about a 5.56mm AR style new rifle being in the running to be selected for ADF SOF forces some years back and whilst not claiming to be an expert, I opined that a full auto fire mode would be desirable over a 3 round burst & semi auto config, particularly if you're the lead man, scout or tail end Charlie. Some "expert" came in trashing that, saying that's why you have have MG's, "you'll burn the barrel out!" & "that's not ADF doctrine! ". "Ok then, explain The Bitch! then? " No explanation was forthcoming but plenty of hollow excuses.

1972 found me driving a 3/4 ton M37 on a two lane blacktop south of the Long Binh Base. We were stopped waiting for the road MPs to wave us on. On the opposite side of the road on the narrow shoulder marched a platoon sized column of Aussie Infantry.
The front man raised his arm, the column stopped, turned, and stepped off the road into the elephant grass. They disappeared, There was no trace of movement through the grass.
There and then gone.
