OMG, yes. My dad recently asked me why am I treating him the way I am. He is my dad. But he is so goddamn un-self-aware that he doesn't even grasp how his lack of parenting and general "character" ever influenced me and my siblings...

Iโm almost 50 and havenโt spoken to my mother in 14 years. She had done several horrific things to me that I forgave. My final straw was something that couldโve harmed my children. My younger sister stopped talking to her three years before I did.
I have to say that I am sad sometimes. Especially because my daughter grew up to look so much like her.

Its called 'parentification', ie the daughter or son become responsible for the mother or father. However, no matter what age, it is never the child's/adult child's job to parent their parent, or to be responsible for healing estrangement

Right! As a parent now I think "I cannot imagine my child not wanting me to be in their life, I hope I never do anything to make them feel that way". I have no idea how you could just let your child fall away from you, and not want to fight for them and figure out what's going on and how to fix things. My Littles just turned 6, I would do anything to make sure they aren't hurting
