The problem is the ego of the student and some beginning white belts tend to have high egos.

Early awareness of how to manage them is better than teaching them late.. But I also agree with the [current] top comment: can depend on the trustowrthiness of the personalities involved.

Learning early to identify danger, self-control in applying pressure and that tapping to pressure/potential danger is sometimes needed can't be a bad thing imo

I was taught leg locks very early by my first 2 teachers who were sambo guys.

But i was told to specifically ask whoever i rolled with "are leg locks acceptable ".
The reason i was told this was because like he said, they don't hurt until the knee blows... so guys can accidentally turn INTO the lock when trying to escape and thats no good for anyone.

Ima beginer with 5 month experience and am a white belt.We just started learning kneebars, heel hooks, and straight ankle lock. My instructor didnt teach them at our level until recently because they werent allowed by white belts in certain competions, or at least the the ones that were/are available to us in our area(Atlanta), but that changed. There was a tournament last week that allowed them at white belt, so started learning them about a month ago.

Might as well, they teach it to you on day 1 if you go to a catch wrestling school or sambo school....

Some teachers online are going back to the old school of jj with defending strikes on the feet and they didn’t really teach leg locks along time ago cause they knew on the feet with strikes it can be dangerous ,usually go into guard and try and stand up and get a good take down or position, but in the knew age of bjj totally 💯 just for injury prevention and getting out of positio

I have a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I wasn't taught heel hooks until much later. He considered them too dangerous.

Yes early and often because when they wait until they are higher belts then it’s just a footnote and not a part of their game

They should be taught just not used in sparring until youre a purple belt because it can easily disable someone for a few months

I'd say no because 70% of their time should be getting down the fundamentals outside of submissions the rest should be spent on higher percentage submissions from uncompromising positions. controlling your opponent is far more important than submitting and is the precursor to submitting them. Learn to control your own body, then an opponents then some standard submissions and by that point you aren't a white belt. Though boring, position and control are most important parts of bjj.

The only thing more dangerous than a black belt is a white belt because they ALWAYS use several times the strength needed for the technique making it unsafe until they learn the basics meaning they get their blue belt

It should be selectively taught
