Iā€™ve lived in Kyoto for over a decade and worked in the tourism industry since 2017. But there was one time I was scolded pretty badly when I had a job at a Maiko house. Guess what I did? I accidentally called a Geiko a Geisha. ā€¦What does that even mean? Maiko are undertraining entertainers from the age of 15~20, and Geiko are fully trained adult entertainers. But did you know that Maiko and Geiko are originally an expression used exclusively in Kyoto? Outside Kyoto, women entertainers were called Hangyoku (understrained) or Geisha (fully trained). So, the people of the entertainment districts in Kyoto still have pride in their unique names and doesnā€™t like being called Geisha. If you ever have a chance to meet them in Kyoto, they would be very happy if you could correctly call them a Geiko.

"I am a Geiko, an artist of ancient Kyoto. Not some plebian entertainer of a random city like Tokyo!" - a geiko, probably

You have got to be very careful when you say "how to be pissed". In British English that means, how to get drunk.

Nowadays, I donā€™t think it takes very much to piss anyone off. Iā€™ve worked retail for a quarter of a century and I see it in full force!šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

I thought this would be about that tourist lady hounding the very uncomfortable geiko in the street with her camera.

From what I've gathered, Kyoto people seem to be the most grudging and passive-aggressive people in Japan. Seems like hating on non-Kyotans is real common. This along with the "asking if you'd like more tea" thing.

I'm disappointed. Being British I automatically assumed that this was a video about drinking lots of alcohol.

I respect that. Itā€™s like getting a PhD in English and wanting to be referred to as Doctor. No, theyā€™re not medical doctors but it is a honorific title given to people who are at the pinnacle of their craft. They didnā€™t spend all that time to be called Mr or Msā€” they spent all that time to be called doctor and thatā€™s the same for Geiko.

The longer the hair on Shogo's head, the more spicy he gets...

Wait till he lets it grow, complete with a full beard. Then he'll invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty
