In Japanese folklore, *Kitsune* (fox) is one of the most revered and mysterious creatures. These supernatural beings are believed to possess intelligence, shape-shifting abilities, and magical powers, particularly the ability to transform into human form—often that of a beautiful woman. Kitsune are frequently portrayed as tricksters but also as protectors and messengers of **Inari**, the Shinto god of rice and fertility. Inari’s fox spirits are often seen as benevolent, guarding shrines and bringing prosperity to worshipers.

The dual nature of Kitsune is a recurring theme in their legends. On one hand, they are mischievous, playing pranks or leading travelers astray. On the other, they can be loyal and protective, especially when they form bonds with humans. A famous story tells of a Kitsune who falls in love with a man and lives with him in human form until her true identity is discovered.

Kitsune are also known for their ability to manipulate fire, known as **kitsunebi**, or "fox fire." In some tales, they use these glowing orbs to lure people into the forest at night. The more tails a Kitsune has (up to nine), the older, wiser, and more powerful it is believed to be. The **nine-tailed Kitsune**, or **Kyūbi no Kitsune**, is often associated with extraordinary abilities and immortality.
