Man, this is so awesome. Getting my first real radio this Xmas, but you already have me thinking about diving into all the cool things you’re doing with digital and preparedness as well.

I have been doing that for years already and have updates as well. Also, keeping printouts of the local PD/Sheriff FCC licenses will show all the frequencies they have at their disposal. The reason I do that is because if their computerized and central dispatch goes down due to a hack or long term power outage, they can and will use those older radios they used to use for comms. I also have my own repeater that runs on 12 volt car batteries and has solar for recharging during the day. That way I have infinite reliable communications and recharge capability.

I am a firm believer in hard copies of your favorite frequencies. Although they need occasional reviews and updates. The backup flash drive, for e-copies is a good idea too, assuming you have power!

This is how you do it.
Even if you only have short range GMRS, this is still the way.

How do you have a windows computer, that has Never been online? No a days, you have to go online (some) to setup the basic programs, just to get a PC up and running!
The backup copy of Windows, is a great idea. As well as all your other programs you use.
