Good points. The Eddas speak on this in the story of Ingwi Freyr falling in love with the Ettin maiden. He sits upon Hliðskjálf, the liminal space, and is overcome with inspiration due to his lack of spiritual rigor. He is possessed with lust for the maiden, even giving up his Ettin-slaying sword to have her hand as a bride.
I think this is the perfect example of what you're talking about here. One should tread lightly when attempting to perform feats of spiritual strength if they have not yet developed and honed their spirit properly.
