Yes, Germans like to run up and down the escalators, they can't go fast enough. I do that too, but never push myself past anyone. Far too dangerous, someone could fall.

I grew up in NW Ohio in a town that was filled with German immigrants. We were taught this rule from a very early age. I love to visit Germany. Everything makes sense there.

Actually, this was done to me, a German, in the year 2000 in London when I could not jump quick enough to the side. Accompanied by a "those damn tourists!" 😂

Ps: I was 15 back then and I did not know the rule but got it pretty fast through that encounter.

This is a common thing in Japan too. You're expected to stand on the left side and leave the right open (Osaka wanted to be contrarian and only they stand on the left), but various facilities have been trying to nudge people to drop this habit.
Their argument is that walking on moving escalators, especially brushing past many people, is dangerous. Also constantly putting more weight on one side wears out the overall machinery slightly faster in the long term.

Not just Germany. This is common knowledge everywhere there is an escalator.

Yes its a unwritten rule, but we learned in school, that this actually decreases the lifespan of the stairs because of the offcentered pressure

we do the same in Madrid, you stay on the right side of the escalator and people going faster passes on the left

I’m a Canadian and I’m constantly infuriated by people who don’t do this. That being said, I’m Canadian so the most I ever do is say sorry and try to squeeze by if I’m really in a rush.

London 1992 - no words just that Hit by the businessman’s leather office suitcase. Once stepped aside there was an endless flow of businessman passing by on the escalator.
Loved the efficiency and the sense behind it, unfortunately in Germany there’s always at least on dumbass who doesn’t care at all

When i was around 5, i was on vacation in Paris, at the airport. When i and my family were on an escalator, she said that I should always stand on the right, to let people go past on the left. I am still doing this, but even on escalators not at the airport.

As a German I would say if you want to walk then use the normal stairs in the middle you know like a normal person

That’s a rule in America, too. People just are too lazy to follow it.
