I didnโ€™t understand what apical pressure meant when I was in dental school. Why would pushing a tooth back into the socket help me remove it?

Well, pushing a tooth apically (toward the socket) helps like this:

Pushing it in expands the socket a bit. That helps to create space to get the root(s) moving.

It also keeps the forceps beaks engaged and less likely to slip or crumble the crown.

When the tooth has some movement then change to the โ€œpullโ€ and remove the tooth
