Magic just announced a massive rules change coming alongside Magic the Gathering Foundations that changes the rules on how combat works. It revolves around blocking one creature with many, or blocking many creatures with one (yes, some cards let you do that) and gives a lot more power to the singular creature. I break down what's changing, why its important, and how to best use these new rules.

Clarification for those who may still be confused: Defenders still get a chance to respond after declaring blockers, they just don’t know how damage will be divided among multiple blocking creatures when they get priority.

Hence “giving your opponent no opportunity to respond knowing how damage will be divided”

Then:
"Math is for blockers"
Now:
"Math is for both of us now"

This is definitely the most clear explanation of the rule change I've heard

This is a big win for forced blocking in Deathtouch decks

In short, use your valorous stance to destroy the 5/5 instead.

I'm going to have to see how this plays before I judge heavily, but this sounds like a dumb change.

And now the big question....

why

"Makes attacking stronger"
So... they buffed red.

Odd to remove a critical interaction point that makes combat tricks (main limited strategy) viable

Brings us one more step closer to "combat damage on the stack".....wait....

I think the most entertaining part of this short is the combat trick used could just destroy the attacking creature

I hate this because it’s needlessly punishing defensive plays. In the example THEY PROVIDED, using a defensive Giant Growth gets you two-for-oned because for some reason they still get to kill a creature

Ill need to see how this plays irl, but this change sounds less enjoyable to me. Some of my cards might as well get tossed out of my deck now.

Quite frankly, my table never played that rule correctly (me included), so that rules change does literally nothing to me lol

Back when i started playing magic this is how i thought combat damage worked. It just felt more intuitive than declaring attack order and everything.

I viewed this rule change as more of a loss in a card’s value as a combat trick, but maybe the intent is that blockers have too much power to start with. Overall, it feels very weird for the interaction to now be:
“I play this card at this niche time to punish your aggression” followed by
“Aight I use this rule to benefit my attack the most without using any card value”
Idk, we’ll see, maybe it’ll be more fun, maybe not.

Wow. For a long time I thought the blocking order was picked during the damage step. However this change goes beyond just moving it to a more intuitive step. Not needing to assign lethal damage is a big change.

They turned my old favorite creature, Pit Spawn from exodus, into even more of a monster.

I'll miss the double blocking tricks to completely blow out attackers to win on the spot but this is ultimately a good change that makes more sense and encourages players to attack more and we still can blow them out with tricks it's just harder now and more often we just force them to effectively trade down witch is still is a nice. Going to be interested in how online will work as assigning damage should take longer than order the blocker and it'll probably be broken for a bit as it's already buggy.

I wasn't even aware of this other than playing mtgo. I'm glad the rulesnare changing bc I was missing out on this trick
