The Manas (mind) is constantly listening to the ahamkara (ego) because of the vrittis (impressions) in the chitta (consciousness). Because of that, it cannot listen to the buddhi (intellect). Today, until a person reaches a state of realisation, he listens to the ahamkara, instead of listening to pure intelligence. So, after all the drama has happened, you realise that you could have responded intelligently to a given situation, instead of reacting to it. The emotions of the vrittis make us do needless actions and fall for desires, attachments and aversions which you may regret later. It is only through Meditation that you can extricate yourself from the vrittis and connect to yourself (pure intelligence). The Manas, which is entangled because of the ahamkara needs to be trained and the vrittis need to be identified and corrected.
