Pretending to be a guest or someone else definitely can help some people clean more thoroughly. Another way to realize how dirty a room or object is is to take a photo of an area. It forces you to see your place from a different perspective.

I used to do this. I used to make my teenagers help get ready for guests too. They eventually started pointing out other people's dirty houses. They'd say "see mom! No one cares!," so I stopped 😂

My Mother does this at her house on a daily basis. It's exhausting.... very negative and paranoid. And guess what? That dust is still on the floor.. it won't get vacuumed until she knows somebody is coming or shows up unexpectedly, then she forces herself vacuums right in front of them. Don't be like her..... because then you start to nitpick other people's stuff, which is out of your control and really none of your business. "How not to be a miserable elder person"
