How Do Decongestants Help Allergies?

How do decongestants help with allergies? So when you have an allergy, pollen from something like a tree, grass, or weed, basically gets into your nose or your eyes and causes you to have swelling of your tissues, usually your turbinates. What happens is more blood goes to the turbinates to create more mucus to wash that pollen out.

So what a decongestion does is you spray something like Afrin into your nose, or you take Sudafed by mouth and it causes the blood vessels to shrink. When they shrink, these tissues literally get smaller and it's just easier for air to go through your nose and into your windpipe.

The good news is they work really well. The bad news is if you use something like Afrin for more than three to four days, you can get what's called rebound congestion, which is when your nose actually gets worse than it was even before you started.

So it's okay to use things like Afrin for a couple days and it's okay to use things like Sudafed for a couple days. But remember that Afrin can cause rebound congestion, and if you use Sudafed or decongestant orally for too many days, it can actually affect your blood pressure.
