Just for context for anyone who may be isnāt from Ireland or maybe someone who is or somewhere who is living there this is nothing to do with an insult to the LGBT community. Itās well documented.going back in times in Ireland and part of northern UK, but thereās a huge Irish diaspora the word means a lazy person. The song is about their lives poisoned by alcoholism, drugs, illness and the unbreakable bond between them that will likely kill them both. It has nothing to do with LGBQT , why would they call eachother that in a song about their love

Iām a survivor of the dark years of AIDS in the West Village. I lost so many of my dearest friends - and Iād like to remind people that at one point in the late 80ās the gay community took back the word āfaggotā and used it among themselves as a way of removing its ugliness.
Once a word becomes commonly used, it loses its sting. My best friend referred to himself using this word - it ābotheredā no one, because everybody else used it as a badge of honor.
Rest in peace, my friendsā¦.i still remember.

The song should, of course, not be edited. This is an insult from one very damaged straight person and is directed at a very damaged straight person, intended to hurt the other person as much as possible. And it is exactly the type of language a damaged alcoholic would have used in the 1980's.
If the lyrics are that problematic for you as an individual, don't listen to the song. The song is from a time and place. Take it or leave it.

You a have a right to be offended. Thatās it. Thatās as far as it goes.
If we are to appreciate art we also have to appreciate its time and its context.
Intent also matters despite the recent insistence that impact matters more.
Is something truly egregious or meant to offend without hate as a motive?
As someone whoās very sensitive about his own background itās something I consider a lot in my daily life to be honest.
I do know that many people with zero āskin in the gameā cultivate offence on others behalf and Iām pretty that theyāre the loudest voices in this particular situation.
That went on a bit. šš
Sorry. If you stuck with me to the end I appreciate it.
Sing it if you want. Donāt sing it if you donāt. But if you relish singing it ?

As an American, I still cringe after living in Ireland and listening to this every year in that time. If we look back to 80's television as well, there are thousands of slurs, derogatory statements, and gender profiling. It's all cringe. If I ran a radio station, I'd probably just omit the word because of personal choice and respect for LGBTQ.
