Menswear's MAGIC Formula: Cost-per-Wear!

18,619 Views • Oct 3, 2023 • Click to toggle off description
"Cost-per-Wear" refers to the real cost of a product, relative to how often you actually wear it. This formula magically reveals whether an object is a good buy based on the use it will receive in your wardrobe.

Here we have one well-made, quality sport coat that costs $1,000, and one cheap, poorly made sport coat that costs $100.

Applying the Cost-per-Wear ratio to the quality sport coat, we see that its initial price goes down every time we wear it, because with every use we're getting our money's worth.

While the $100 jacket was initially cheaper, it's so low-quality that it isn't worth wearing. Its Cost-per-Wear remains high, because we're not getting much use out of it.

In menswear, items with good Cost-per-Wear can be worn regularly with a variety of outfits, so it pays to invest in them. Some of the best examples are: overcoats, classic menswear jewelry and watches, shoes, leather goods, and versatile neckwear.

For more information on the Cost-per-Wear formula, check out our full-length video!

Cost per-wear for my Barbour jacket has been excellent, it's been versatile enough to be a fall, winter, and spring jacket and is durable enough to last me ages as well as be repairable and able to be re-waxed.

I wear a suit 6 days a week, 5 for work and once on sunday. I own 3 and rotate. I spent $200 on each of them. I assume they last about a year, putting them at $2 a wear. A $1000 suit would take 5 years to hit that price point. So I guess my question is would a $1000 suit last 6-700 wears?

I’ve seen some people that look like a million bucks in a $100 suit. I’ve seen some expensive suits that look downright awful on the wearer.

Always remember: money can’t buy *style*.

Call me a freak, but I want a man that wears a suit, and knows which utensils to use throughout a formal dinner.

You left out the important factor called wears before I irreparably stain the item.

I know that cost perwear only considers the price tag of clothing but do you ever discuss about cost of ownership? Natural fabric like wool, cashmere, and silk require special treatment. How about storage? And leather care?

Its important to take into account maintenance costs. So simply dividing the initial cost with number of times it’s worn is wrong.

You need to put a link to the longer video in a pinned comment at the top of the comment section AND tell us viewers you're doing so.

You start the video by defining what a good buy is. Well the $100 jacket for most is bc it’s likely a workhorse. The sole intent is for the wearer to have it ready to go each day. Meaning more wears. While the $1000 jacket is nice, it likely comes out for special occasions. Also, if the wearer is spending that on one jacket then they have more to rotate through, meaning this $1000 will probably make it out 6 times a year and be gone in 3.

I bought a cheap good looking shoe not a while ago, and it was made from cheap synthetic leather and the leather started flaking not a week later. 😢

Or you could just wear the $100 coat the same amount of times and the price per wear would be drastically lower. The guys out here trying to push formalism on people. Same kinda guys that look down upon people for wearing t shirts and basket ball shorts. This channel for the rich who don’t give a care about others and how money can be spent on other things that do much better for the world
