We know from two different historians, Tacitus and Suetonius that for decades after the death of the Roman Emperor Nero a belief that the emperor was in fact still alive but living in hiding and would soon return to destroy Rome persisted. In fact, versions of this rumor would persist at least until the 5th century, albeit without the aid of living imposters.

The first pseudo Nero appeared a matter of months after the suicide of the true emperor, perhaps in the autumn of 68 AD or in the winter of 69. Tacitus tells us this imposter was a slave or perhaps a freedman who gathered a group of veteran soldiers and took to piracy. He was later killed in fighting with the real Roman army.

The next imposter appeared during the reign of Titus (79-81 AD). He attempted to garner the support of the Parthian king, Artabanus III in taking over the Roman protectorate of Armenia. This plot almost worked, until the king discovered the nature of the deception and executed the imposter.

The last imposter is only mentioned in one line of Suetonius' biography of Nero as having lived when the historian was still a boy, perhaps in 89 or 90 AD.
