This animation provides a glimpse into the discovery of a supernova by the Dark Energy Survey, captured within the field observed by one of the individual detectors in the Dark Energy Camera. The supernova erupted in a spiral galaxy with a redshift of 0.04528, corresponding to a light-travel time of approximately 0.6 billion years. In contrast, the quasar on the right side of the frame boasts a redshift of 3.979, with a staggering light-travel time of 11.5 billion years.
