My guess is that someone stole it for gits and shiggles.
Here in Sweden there is a teeny tiny place called Grovare ("coarser", though not exactly grammatically correct) that was 6 km away from the road. So of course there was a sign saying "Grovare 6" (with 6 being read as "sex" in Swedish). That sign had a tendency to vanish every now and then, until they replaced it with one that said "Grovare 5" instead. It's likely something similar happened with the elves.
