If you visit the various shrines in Japan, you will realize that the Torii gates have different colors. They are mainly red or white. White was originally mainly used as an expression of holiness. This is also the reason why the kimono worn by women when getting married, the Shiro-muku (white kimono), is completely white. After Buddhism spread in Japan, the color red became mainstream. In Buddhism, the color red (vermilion) is meant to ward off evil. Vermilion is always used in the makeup of maiko to prevent them from being exposed to evil spirits, as white powder makes them look like ghosts. However, there are other torii that are not painted, blue, black, yellow, gold, and pink. Please look for them when you travel Japan. By the way, the torii represents the shrine's boundary, and once you enter it, it indicates that you are in a sacred space. It would be polite to bow before and after you pass the gates.

I often bowed at tori when I visited Japan and many Japanese looked quite surprised and delighted to see a foreign tourist doing that. It's great to respect the local habits, everyone should remember that.

Thank You for the teachings of Japanese culture to Everyone with your own valuable time, And efforts. I have learned something today, You have actually taught me a great deal beyond anyone else that I can think of about Japan. It would have been nice to have learned more in our own public schools about your culture. šŸ˜Š

Iā€™m gonna bow when entering and exiting a shrine when I visit Japan.
I did not know about that respect at the Tori gate before.

I had no idea about the color significance, thanks Shogo!
Also: when walking through a Torii gate, you aren't supposed to walk down the middle, correct?

Shogo, is there more about color symbolism in Japanese culture? For comparison in European heraldry red is military strength, blue is truth and loyalty, purple is justice, and other associations as well.

There's so much overlap in religions. In a Catholic Church, you're also supposed to bow to the tabernacle (where the Eucharist is kept) when you enter and leave the sanctuary. And there are different colors for different holy time observations

You may not know this, but many USAF bases in the United States had tori gates at their entrances, often holding signs saying things like ā€œGateway to (insert squadron name here) to remind airmen that they were to dedicate themselves to the baseā€™s mission.

Not the same exact kind of religious or even spiritual meaning, but similar in that airmen were to put themselves aside when entering.

And please don't walk in the middle. The middle is especially reserved for the kami and spirits to pass through, so walk a little to the right or left.
