Being autistic is actually like walking onto a movie set when you were never given the script and don't know the genre of the movie

So a little detail I find amusing is the use of "we" instead of "I" when rehearsing. I have ADHD, and it's really common among people with ADHD to refer to their brain almost as a separate being from themselves. Things like, "I wanted to do x, but my brain wouldn't let me." I think it's because we often feel like we don't have full control or authority over ourselves and our brains are getting in the way. There are a lot of commonalities between ADHD and autism, and now I wonder if this is one of them or if I'm overanalyzing this haha.

So relatable! When my social anxiety kicks in, especially if I am caught off guard, my brain immediately shrivels into nothingness and I stumble and fumble the most basic interactions.

Upgrade your "scripts" to flowcharts, which can account for unexpected turns in conversation. You can even set up a database for common small talk questions and answers like: "Comment on outfit" : "Thankyou" and "Comment on weather" : "It's good/bad".

Flowcharts are key to masking in the dynamic world of neurotypical small talk. You can even expect the unexpected with: "Unexpected question?" : "Give me a minute to think about that" or "I'm not sure how to answer that right now" or even "Hmmm". This will provide valuable time to think of something on the spot.

Good luck!

I'm allistic, and I struggle with this sooo much tooo. It's gotten to the point where I create alternative scripts to prepare myself, but they're never enough and I end up fumbling anyways.

Morgan! I've been watching your content for a good while after starting to learn more about autism. I'm currently having my assessment and your videos have genuinely been SO HELPFUL! So much of it have been very relatable, which in turn has definitely lessened my anxiety regarding this.

Waiting times have been long and it's taken many months, but I'm having my last interview tomorrow! Last time she basically said that she is already convinced that I have it, and that we only need to finish it for formalities' sake! I also ended up with an ADHD diagnosis.

OMG! This is my brain. This! It's so hard to explain to people. I always say that I over analyse everything when people ask me how autism affects my daily life. This is exactly what I mean. In my head, I go through everything that could possibly happen and get super stressed as a result. Oh, and then I spend days, weeks, months, agonizing over what I did wrong in every situation and beating myself up for not getting it right. Spontaneity is evil.

Neither me or my friend have autism, but we are both pretty introverted and so before we go into a store to order we have to do that rehearsal lol :)

Edit: I realized that I phrased that incorrectly. While we are both introverted, we also have a bit of social anxiety, and that's the cause. Sorry :/

A good way I’ve found to combat this is to have multiple “scripts” and reminder yourself that it’s okay to go off script occasionally. Also taking actual Acting classes & preforming helped.
